Backing Up Your Data

How disciplined are you about backing up your computer? Do you have piles of unlabelled DVDs with backups randomly save when you remember or when someone else tells you about their computer crash?

Perhaps you have a collection of memory sticks cluttering up your desk drawer. Or you might be a bit more organised and have an external hard drive which you religiously back up once  a week?

data cloud storage Well I am one of those who is filled with good intentions but seldom is able to remember to buy more DVDs, I lose my memory sticks and using the external hard drive is far too much effort. 

Fortunately I use GMail which has a great system of labels so I am pretty well sorted there. I have several e-mail addresses and set up my GMail to receive and send from whichever account I happen to need to use. So that is my mail sorted. Google provided 25GB of FREE storage so I don't need to delete any mails to keep making space. However if you are really never going to need a particular mail there is no point in storing it.

I also started to use Google Drive for file sharing with colleagues and friends. As part of the package Google allowed you to have 5GB FREE storage excluding your Google Documents.  Now I don't like having to pay for stuff if I can possibly avoid it. So I uploaded the really really really critical documents and files from my laptop hard drive and did my best to backup the balance of my data onto my external hard drive. 

This morning I sounded like a real nerdy geek when I yelled to my husband that Google has now decided to combine your e-mail storage and your data storage. This means that I can use the excess e-mail storage that I wasn't using and backup the rest of my data in my Google Drive.

OK for those of you who aren't familiar with Google Drive are no doubt shaking your heads and saying "but what happens when I am offline? How do I access my data then?" No problem. Google has a facility to sync your data so it is available online and offline and you can even access your data from your Smartphone and/or tablet or other computer provided you have synced your various devices. 

How does this work?

Go to Google Drive and select download.

A special folder will be created on your computer called Google Drive. Yip you can't mistake it.

You can now drag either individual files or folders into your Google Drive folder and away up into the cloud they go. 

A Word of Caution

There is one drawback especially when you are uploading your data for the first time. You need to make sure that you have sufficient bandwidth to be able to do it.

If you only use 3G which is very expensive this might not be a great option. We have an ADSL line which makes life a lot easier. 

However once you have uploaded your data, each time you edit a document or upload a new picture or file only the changes are added.
